Chapter 8

Maggie got off the plane in LA and searched for Candie. She knew she'd be there because she said she would. Pretty soon, she saw this wildly waving arm, and she rushed down the floor to her best friend, hugging her tightly. Candie was squealing in her ear. “God, I missed you. It was so wonderful for you to be where you were; we’re just ready for you to come back to work. When the boss told us you were coming, we were so excited. We just couldn't believe our luck.” Maggie couldn’t get a word in edgewise, so she just nodded her head and smiled a lot. Maggie leaned back. “Yes, I missed you too, Candie. It's good to be home. I forgot how crazy it was around here, though,” she said, looking around. “It will take some getting used to again I think.’ The two walked arm in arm down the floor.

Maggie went into the office the next day, and everyone was almost as pleased as Candie to see her; she got hugs, claps, and applause from everyone. She went into her boss’s office and sat down in the chair. “Well,” Peter said. “I'm glad you're back.” They went over some strategies and she went back to her office.

She sat in the chair at her beautiful desk, looking out at her wonderful view of all the tall buildings. They certainly aren't the mountains, are they? You know I thought I could come back here and be happy. I have to give it a try because I wasn't happy there either. She pulled her charts closer to her and began to work.

Steve was having the same struggle back in Wyoming. He didn't realize he'd miss her either, but he did. There was an emptiness, kind of a gap in his heart where he thought probably Maggie belonged. Well, it's too late now. I have Amberly, and she will do great. You just have to remember that you can't always have what you want. He rode out to check on the cows and the quiet seemed to settle him a little bit.

Amberly had thrown herself into the wedding with all the vigor of a wrestler in a mud pit. She kept plying poor Steve with questions, and he didn't know what to answer. He kept looking at his mom. She’d just shake her head, but Amberley and her mother plowed through it. They managed to get it all figured out. He knew it would be a beautiful wedding. He just didn't know what to do with Amberley and all of her plans. He felt kind of freaky for a little bit.

Candie decided she would become Maggie’s matchmaker. She set out with a gusto looking for all the men in the world that would maybe qualify for Maggie’s heart. Maggie went on several dates. She finally told Candie one day, “You know if this next one doesn't pan out, girl, I'm done. This is getting old fast, and I’m not having a lot of fun.
